Greening the desert in your lifetime, China takes the lead

At ONESTAGETOSPACE we are strong believers in the fact that humanity already has all the technologies at its hands, to not only protect the environment, but to restore degraded eco-systems.

Although climate plays an important role in determining which parts of the globe are on average more arid, consorted efforts can result in changing micro-climates and even regional rainfall patterns.

And this is logical. Cutting down trees, slash-and-burn tactics, can devoid entire areas of plant cover, making them less resistant to droughts or over exploitation. Finally, as the last straw that breaks the back, rain fall in these areas dwindles, until no rain falls at all. Most of the deserts in the world are man-made with many cities lying forgotten beneath the sands. This means these areas can also be reclaimed.

Regardless of what climate pessimists think, a warmer climate does not mean a drier climate. Evaporation will increase, and if we put more aerosols into the air, acting as nuclei for cloud formation, we can help the rain to fall in areas where people and cattle live.

An example of how we can tackle this challenge as a species, is this promising approach being executed in the Kubuqi desert in China, on its border with Mongolia. The video shows dramatic changes when one actually organises and invests the effort to change the fate of the inhabitants in the 7th largest desert of China.

A somewhat longer video, detailing other aspects of this low tech project, can be found here:

There is a large potential for machine automation of this planting process.

These are the sort of technologies that allow us to believe that humanity will one day be able to restore not only our planet, but establish life, even on other planets and moons of our solar system.

Of course. Forests are complex ecosystems. While planting large areas and turning them green in a couple of years is necessary and very gratifying, you must also be prepared for challenges, like the next fragment shows.

Ultimately, a mature afforestation approach requires in depth knowledge exchange. International cooperation is one of the best ways to introduce best practices faster:

This article seems like it is written by the Chinese propaganda ministry, but that is not true. The world needs examples to learn from. This article just focuses on a China because it is very actively tackling in a manner that bypasses many countries in speed. Old stereotypes are useless when looking at how China approaches its environmental challenges. The speed with which it actively tackles them, also in other areas, is an inspiration. Even Time magazine noticed these projects help real people :

ONESTAGETOSPACE is a genuine space effort seeking funds to further develop and build its MARVELOUS reusable vehicle. An innovative design allows us to decimate the operational cost of both orbital and interplanetary crewed missions, from surface to surface, over even the best industry competitors. This maturing site allows us to talk about our vehicle and to share stories about projects and people that inspire us on our long journey. If there is a story you feel we should cover, or a person that would like to be interviewed, let us know. Subscribe, like, share or support us with time, money or advice to help bring this project to fruition. It is ONESTAGETOSPACE, and you can become part of the adventure.
